Lagos State Government Begins Removal of Illegal Structures After Amnesty Period Ends

The Lagos State Government has commenced the removal of illegal structures across the state following the expiration of the amnesty period granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. This initiative, led by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), aims to enforce urban planning regulations and ensure a safer environment for residents.

Enforcement Begins in Ogudu GRA

According to LASBCA’s announcement, the enforcement drive began in Ogudu GRA, where officials moved in to dismantle unapproved structures. The amnesty period, which was initially granted to allow property owners to regularize their building documents, expired on December 31, 2024.

The Permanent Secretary of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, emphasized that the exercise is necessary to restore order to Lagos’ physical planning landscape. He stated that multiple notices were issued before enforcement began, giving affected property owners enough time to comply.

Why the Enforcement is Necessary

Oki explained that the state government extended the amnesty period to accommodate more property owners, yet some still refused to comply. He noted that illegal structures contribute to environmental hazards, increase the risk of building collapses, and obstruct public spaces meant for community use.

He further warned that the enforcement drive will continue across various parts of Lagos as the government intensifies efforts to rid the metropolis of unapproved buildings, prevent environmental degradation, and ensure public safety.

“A well-planned city is a safe city. Compliance today ensures a better Lagos for all tomorrow.”

Warnings to Property Owners

The Lagos State Government has urged property owners and developers to comply with building regulations to avoid similar enforcement actions. The overseeing Permanent Secretary assured that all affected buildings had been marked months in advance, and clear directives were given on how to regularize their status.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, had earlier announced the amnesty extension due to the high volume of applications. Initially, the amnesty program ran from May 2 to July 30, 2024, allowing property owners to obtain planning permits without penalty fees. However, it was later extended by three months from August 1 to October 31, 2024, to give more people an opportunity to comply.

With this enforcement action, the Lagos State Government is reinforcing its commitment to maintaining a well-structured and safe urban environment. Property owners are advised to take necessary steps to regularize their buildings to avoid penalties. A well-planned city benefits everyone, ensuring safety, order, and sustainable development for all.
