NADDC Trains 15,000 Technicians to Bridge Auto Skills Gap

NADDC’s Director-General, Joseph Osanipin.

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has trained over 15,000 technicians through its Mechatronics Programme for Tricycle and Motorcycle Repair and Maintenance. The initiative is aimed at closing Nigeria’s automotive skills gap, creating jobs, and preparing technicians for the future of mobility.

At the closing ceremony of a five-day training in Makurdi, Benue State, NADDC’s Director-General, Joseph Osanipin, explained that the programme was designed to equip technicians with the technical know-how needed for modern vehicles.

Why the Training Matters

Modern motorcycles and tricycles are no longer purely mechanical. Many now operate with electronic systems and dual-fuel technology (Petrol and Compressed Natural Gas – CNG). With the Federal Government’s Presidential CNG Initiative already attracting $980 million in investments, deploying 20,000 CNG-powered vehicles, and establishing 315 conversion centres nationwide, the need for skilled technicians is urgent.

“Today’s tricycles and motorcycles are increasingly defined by electronic systems and dual-fuel technology. Preparing our technicians for this shift is not only necessary but urgent.”- Osanipin

 Opportunities for Nigerians

The NADDC has also set up 21 Automotive Training Centres across the six geopolitical zones, with 16 of them fully equipped with modern tools. These centres give young people and technicians opportunities to learn industry-standard skills that can:

Create jobs: Skilled technicians will always be in demand.

Boost income: With specialized knowledge, technicians can charge better rates.

Support communities: Tricycle and motorcycle repair is a growing need, especially in rural and urban transport systems.

Tap into CNG opportunities: With Nigeria shifting toward cleaner, cheaper fuel, CNG conversion and maintenance skills are valuable assets.

How You Can Benefit

If you are a young person, artisan, or technician interested in this field:

Seek enrolment at one of the NADDC Automotive Training Centres.

Partner with transport operators who are converting to CNG-powered vehicles.

Leverage the skills to start your own workshop or expand an existing one.

Stay updated as new opportunities in the automotive sector continue to emerge.

The NADDC’s training programme is more than just a skills upgrade—it is an empowerment tool. By preparing technicians for the future of mobility, the Council is not only creating career opportunities but also contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth. Those who take advantage of this initiative can secure sustainable livelihoods in a rapidly evolving industry.
