Recognising excellence and raising awareness in the insurance sector

Nigeria Takes the Spotlight

Nigerian journalists have once again made the country proud by earning top honours at the 10th edition of the Pan-African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards, held in Cape Town, South Africa. Hosted by Continental Reinsurance Plc, the event coincided with the company’s CEO Summit and marked a decade of celebrating journalistic excellence in the re/insurance industry across Africa.

Celebrating Outstanding Nigerian Talent

Blessing Ifechukwude of the Voice of Nigeria emerged as the winner in the English Broadcast Category with her compelling report on the impact of fuel subsidy removal on health insurance in Oyo State. Her work was praised for its clarity, depth, and strong storytelling.

Another Nigerian journalist, Destiny Onyemihia, also from the Voice of Nigeria, was named First Runner-Up in the same category for her insightful article, “Life Insurance: A Pathway for Seafarers.” Their achievements highlight Nigeria’s continued leadership in impactful and informative journalism.

Diverse Entries and Rising Participation

This year’s awards recorded a 29% increase in participation, with over 150 entries submitted from 19 African countries across English, French, and Arabic-speaking regions. The entries covered a wide range of topics including health, motor, agriculture, AI, cyber insurance, gender-focused insurance, and more.

Patrick Alushula of Nation Media Group (Kenya) was named the Overall Winner and also won the English Print Category for his article on rising cybercrime and the adoption of cyber insurance.

“Journalism has the power to make complex issues like insurance understandable and relatable. These awards celebrate not just excellence, but the impact of storytelling in shaping Africa’s future.” – Michael Wilson, Chief Judge, Pan-African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards.

Encouraging Quality Reporting in Africa

Nazare, Group CEO of Continental Re Holdings, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting quality journalism across Africa. “This milestone reinforces our long-standing commitment to advancing quality reporting and raising awareness about the value of insurance across the continent,” he said.
