Union Bank Empowers Deaf Students Through Mathematics Competition

Union Bank of Nigeria has once again demonstrated its commitment to inclusive education by sponsoring a special mathematics competition for students with hearing impairments. The competition, organised by the Ajofa Special Education Foundation for the Deaf, took place at the Wesley School for the Hearing Impaired in Surulere, Lagos.

This initiative was supported through UnionCares, the bank’s Corporate, Sustainability and Innovation arm, and aimed to empower deaf learners and highlight their academic potential, particularly in mathematics.

Bridging Educational Gaps for Physically Challenged Students

Themed “Impacting Deaf Students and Life with Mathematics in Nigeria”, the event brought together ten students from different schools across Lagos, both within and outside the deaf community. The competition was not just about winning but about providing a platform for these students to showcase their brilliance and challenge stereotypes about disability.

Representatives from Union Bank, Lagos State Education Board, school principals, and teachers were present to witness and support the learners.

“At Union Bank, we believe that development must be inclusive. These students have shown that disability is not an inability to function properly. They are mathematicians and problem-solvers,”

    — Olufunmilola Aluko, Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Union Bank.
