NAFDAC Raises Concern Over Drug Misuse and Self-Medication
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about the dangers of self-medication, drug misuse, and the improper use of antibiotics.
The agency made this known during a public sensitisation programme held in Mushin, Lagos, where healthcare professionals, community leaders, and residents gathered to discuss ways to improve patient safety and promote safe medicine use in Nigeria.
According to NAFDAC, while medicines play a vital role in treating illnesses and improving quality of life, they can also become harmful when used incorrectly.
Why Self-Medication Can Be Dangerous
Many Nigerians buy medicines without proper medical advice, often relying on recommendations from friends, family members, or online sources.
However, NAFDAC explained that self-medication can lead to:
- Wrong diagnosis and treatment
- Serious side effects
- Drug allergies and adverse reactions
- Delayed recovery
- Increased healthcare costs
- Organ damage
- Avoidable deaths
The agency stressed that medicines should only be taken according to the instructions of qualified healthcare professionals.

The Growing Problem of Antibiotic Misuse
One of the major concerns raised by NAFDAC is the misuse of antibiotics.
Many people stop taking antibiotics once they feel better or use them without a doctor’s prescription. This practice contributes to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), a situation where bacteria become resistant to treatment.
As a result, infections that were once easy to cure become more difficult and expensive to treat.

How Nigerians Can Use Medicines Safely
To protect yourself and your family, health experts recommend:
1. Avoid Self-Medication
Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before taking any medication.
2. Follow Prescriptions Correctly
Take medicines exactly as prescribed, including dosage and duration.
3. Buy Medicines from Trusted Sources
Purchase drugs only from licensed pharmacies and accredited healthcare facilities.
4. Report Unusual Reactions
If you experience unexpected side effects after taking a medicine, report them immediately to your healthcare provider or NAFDAC.
5. Never Share Prescription Medicines
A drug prescribed for one person may be harmful to another.
Why Reporting Side Effects Matters
NAFDAC emphasized the importance of pharmacovigilance, which involves monitoring and reporting adverse drug reactions.
According to the agency, a single report about a harmful drug reaction could help protect thousands of other patients from similar experiences.
Healthcare professionals and members of the public are encouraged to report suspected adverse drug reactions through NAFDAC’s reporting channels.

“Patient safety begins with the rational use of medicines. Medicines are meant to heal, not harm.” — NAFDAC
The warning from NAFDAC serves as an important reminder that medicines should be used responsibly. While medications can save lives, misuse, self-medication, and antibiotic abuse can create serious health risks for individuals and communities.
By seeking professional medical advice, following prescriptions correctly, and reporting adverse drug reactions, Nigerians can help promote safer healthcare practices and protect public health.
