The Federal University of Transportation, Daura, Katsina State,
The Federal University of Transportation, Daura, Katsina State, is set to offer its students an international learning experience. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Umar Adam, announced that students will soon travel to countries like China, Russia, and the United Kingdom for practical training. This initiative is aimed at providing hands-on skills and world-class knowledge in transportation and engineering fields.
“3+2” Learning Model to Boost Practical Skills
The university is adopting a “three plus two” academic model, where students will study theoretical courses for three years in Nigeria, then complete two years of practical training abroad. This approach mirrors a past collaboration with Ahmadu Bello University, where students in civil and mechanical engineering were sent to China under a similar arrangement. Many of those students now serve as lecturers, helping to shape the university’s future.
Partnerships and Global Standards
Professor Adam explained that the university is working closely with the Chinese construction company building the institution to maintain international standards. The university is also forming partnerships with major transport regulatory agencies, both in Nigeria and abroad, to enrich student exposure and research.
TETFund Support and New Programmes
The university has been listed for TETFund support, which will help improve infrastructure and staff development. Plans are underway to introduce smart classrooms, expand online learning, and promote eco-friendly facilities like solar power and green spaces.
In addition to engineering and transport studies, the university aims to roll out new academic programmes in transportation security, aviation technology, smart transport systems, and sustainable urban mobility. Executive and short courses will also be introduced for professionals in the transport industry.
“Our goal is to produce globally competitive graduates by blending local theoretical knowledge with international practical exposure. We want our students to become pioneers in transforming Nigeria’s transport sector.” — Professor Umar Adam, Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Transportation, Daura.
Research and Innovation to Be Expanded
Research will be intensified in key areas such as autonomous vehicles, green logistics, and smart transport systems. The university will also focus on building strong industry links and enhancing staff capacity to meet global standards.
The Federal University of Transportation, Daura, is taking bold steps to equip its students with global exposure and practical knowledge in transportation and engineering. Despite facing funding challenges, the institution remains committed to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in learning. Nigerians can look forward to a new generation of skilled transport professionals ready to transform the country’s infrastructure.
