Lagos to Enforce Ban on Single-Use Plastics Starting July 1, 2025
Plastic pollution Lagos
The Lagos State Government has announced that it will commence full enforcement of the ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) across the state beginning July 1, 2025. This initiative is part of the state’s broader commitment to sustainable environmental practices and aims to mitigate pollution, safeguard public health, and preserve ecosystems.
Extensive Stakeholder Engagement and Transition Period
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that the decision follows an 18-month period of strategic engagement with stakeholders, including manufacturers and marketers. This period was intended to allow for a smooth transition and alignment with global best practices.
Scope of the Ban
The ban targets various single-use plastic items, such as plastic straws, cutlery, carrier bags, and polystyrene containers. These items have been identified as significant contributors to environmental degradation, particularly in a coastal city like Lagos.
“This ban is not just a policy; it is a commitment to safeguarding our environment and the health of our people. We all have a role to play in creating a cleaner, greener Lagos.”
— Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources
Government’s Commitment to Enforcement
The Lagos State Government has emphasized its readiness to enforce the ban effectively. Drawing parallels with the successful enforcement of the Styrofoam ban in 2024, the government assures that similar measures will be implemented to ensure compliance.
A Call to Action
The ban on single-use plastics represents a significant step towards environmental responsibility in Lagos State. It underscores the government’s dedication to fostering sustainable practices and protecting the environment for future generations.
