WACT Enhances Healthcare in Rivers State with Solar Power Systems

The West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) Nigeria has brought hope to healthcare delivery in Rivers State by donating and installing solar power systems in two primary healthcare centres in its host communities, Onne and Ogu. This initiative aims to address the persistent power outage challenges and improve the quality of healthcare services in these areas. 

Beneficiaries of this impactful project include the Model Primary Health Care Centre in Onne, Eleme Local Government Area, and the Model Primary Health Care Centre in Ogu, Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area. Over 25,000 households are set to benefit from enhanced healthcare access due to these installations. 

Corporate Responsibility and Community Development 

Speaking at the commissioning event, Frederik Klinke, Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals Nigeria, emphasized the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility. According to him, the initiative aligns with the company’s mission to support the communities and governments where they operate. 

Health and education are the key pillars of APM Terminal’s global CSR strategy. By improving the general health of communities, especially women, we empower them economically. This solar project is a pilot, and we aim to scale it up for a broader impact,” Klinke stated. 

Similarly, Jeethu Jose, Managing Director of WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria, reiterated the significance of the project, highlighting the role of primary healthcare in reducing the burden on secondary and tertiary facilities. “Access to power is a basic necessity. Strengthening these centres will bring long-term growth and progress to our host communities,” Jose added. 

Tackling Urgent Community Needs 

Justin Okwuofu, Community Relations Manager for WACT-APM Terminals, shared that the solar project followed an assessment that identified reliable power supply as the most pressing need for the health centres. The project ensures uninterrupted power supply, which is vital for critical healthcare services such as maternity care, immunizations, and emergency treatments.
