LASG Urges Homeowners in Government Estates to Collect Property Documents
The Lagos State Government has called on homeowners in state-owned housing estates, especially those who bought homes before 2019, to come forward and collect their Deed of Sub-Lease. This important document serves as proof of ownership and is vital for legal and financial purposes.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Ayangburen Jubilee Housing Estate, Ikorodu, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Mr Abdulhafis Toriola (represented by the Director of Estate Department, Mrs Olukemi Fosudo) explained that many residents still do not have their Deed of Sub-Lease.
Why the Deed of Sub-Lease Matters
A Deed of Sub-Lease is a legal document that:
Confirms you are the rightful owner of your home in Lagos State Government housing estate.
It is required when you want to use your property as collateral for loans.
Can help with property disputes, resale, or succession planning.
Toriola stressed that this document is different from the Letter of Confirmation, which is only issued after full payment and agreement to terms in the Letter of Offer.
How to Get Your Property Documents
Homeowners who:
Bought their homes before 2019
Have not received their Deed of Sub-Lease
Have only a Letter of Confirmation
Have not completed full payment
…are encouraged to visit the Ministry of Housing in Alausa, Ikeja, for verification and guidance.
“We want our homeowners to be fully documented so that they can enjoy peace of mind and all the legal benefits that come with owning property,” — Mr Abdulhafis Toriola
Community Responsibility Still Key
Beyond documentation, the government also urged residents to take full ownership of their estates by obeying estate rules and living harmoniously with one another. The state reaffirmed its commitment to delivering affordable and sustainable housing to all Lagosians.
If you or someone you know owns a home in a government estate in Lagos—especially purchased before 2019—now is the time to secure your documents. Having the Deed of Sub-Lease gives you legal ownership, financial flexibility, and peace of mind.
