Ijora Bridge in Lagos to Be Fully Closed for Repairs from April 27

The Federal Government has announced the full closure of Ijora Bridge in Lagos starting Saturday, April 27, 2025, to carry out essential repair works. This was confirmed by the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, during an inspection visit.

According to her, the bridge, which connects Ijora Causeway to Apapa, is in urgent need of repairs due to damaged bearings—spring-like supports located beneath the bridge deck. These defective parts have caused unusual vibrations that commuters have already started noticing.

Why the Bridge Is Closing

Mrs Kesha explained that this closure marks the final phase of a previously awarded contract, which involves lifting the bridge deck to replace approximately 50 faulty bearings across three sections of the bridge. She assured the public that the bridge is not in danger of collapse but stressed the need for urgent intervention to prevent further damage and ensure safety.

“This is the first major repair on this bridge since it was constructed. It won’t collapse, but it needs help,” she said.

Traffic Diversions and Management

To reduce traffic gridlock, the ministry has planned alternative routes for road users:

Light vehicles coming from Ijora will be diverted through the Seven Up Roundabout to access Apapa.

Heavy-duty trucks will be redirected through Costain via Iganmu to reach the port area.

Kesha emphasized that these diversions have been carefully planned and are not expected to cause major disruptions. She also mentioned that after the initial phase requiring total closure, subsequent activities like asphalt replacement might be done in stages, possibly on Sundays.

“It won’t collapse, but it definitely needs help. If you drive on the bridge now, you will feel vibrations. That is because the bearings, the spring-like supports under the deck, have weakened significantly.”

Government Appeals for Public Support

The Ministry of Works is urging commuters and residents to stay informed and cooperate with traffic officials during the repair period. Kesha noted that the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has mandated that bridge closures be well-publicized to ensure public awareness.

The Ijora Bridge serves as a vital link to Apapa’s major ports, and while the temporary closure may cause some inconvenience, the repairs are necessary for long-term safety. Motorists are encouraged to follow the new routes and exercise patience, knowing that their cooperation will help speed up the repair process and restore the bridge to a safer condition.
